Tutorial 2B: Google v2: The rise of Googzilla
Tuesday, November 7th, 13.00
Room: 5/6
"You can make money without doing evil" is a famous part of Google's philosophy, but Google has come a very long way since its early years and successful IPO. There is no doubt that Google has clearly and dramatically influenced the search marketplace. In fact, Google has changed search, web advertising, and perhaps most importantly, content integration. Even SAP - a company far removed from Google - describes its most recent NetWeaver search system as "like Google's".
In this tutorial you'll spend the afternoon with vendor neutral expert Stephen Arnold who follows Google closely. Steve is also the author of Bear Stearns's "The Google Ecosystem" (January 2006), and "The Google Legacy: How Google's Internet Search Is Transforming Application software" (September 2005). Google is also covered in Steve's Enterprise Search Report, now in its third edition, and his new text mining report, also published by CMS Watch. You will learn how Google has changed itself from a search company to an operating platform company.
Most people know about Google, version 1. Now you can learn about Google, version 2, and how you can take advantage of this change. Steve will provide a preview of his new information service that focuses on Google's activities in the United States government, a business sector largely ignored by the trade and business media.
Main topics for the tutorial include:
- Review of the Google Appliance, the Trojan horse of the enterprise integration market.
- Overview of Google's OneBox API. Examples and a discussion of the implications of the Google Appliance OneBox API will allow attendees to assess the appropriateness of Google's integration solution for their organisation. Mashups are more than web 2.0 novelties. They are the next-generation of enterprise information applications.
- SEO update. Attendees will learn about Google's increased focus on substantive content and its quality-scoring technique. The Google patent for this metric will be discussed. Attendees will be given a URL to a complete collection of Google patents, including the all important March 2005 patent with its system and method for using time as an indicator of quality.
- A look at Google's partner program and how it can open new business opportunities for companies and consultants.
